Born 1967 in Santiago de Chile. Studies of law, piano and music theory at the Universidad de Chile. Conducting studies at the Bowling Green State University, USA (1995) and at the „Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler“ Berlin with Prof. Hans Dieter Baum as fellow of the DAAD (German Service of Academic Exchange). He graduated 2000 with the higher qualification in concert with the Berliner Sinfonie Orchester. He was fellow student by many conducting master class, such as »CIDEM-OEA« Venezuela (1994-96); »Kirill Kondrashin«, Holland (2000, Prof. Peter Eötvös, Ton Koopman, Eri Klas); »Dirigenten-Forum« of the German Music Council (1997-2002, concerts with Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle, Jena Philharmonics, Orchestra of the State Theatre Kassel, Orchestra of the Theatre Meiningen).
Assistant conductor at the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin (2001), Munich Music Biennale (2002), Deutsche Oper Berlin (2002, 2004) and to Ingo Metzmacher at the Netherlands Opera House, Amsterdam (2008).
In 2002, he founded together with director Sven Holm and dramaturge Sebastian Bark the opera company NOVOFLOT in Berlin. The company has addressed a wide range of repertoire, experimented with diverse possibilities of the contemporary music theatre and created new formats. Its productions include innovative stagings of less performed pieces like Ernst Krenek’s The bell tower (2002) or Antigona by Tommaso Traetta (2004), series of world premieres like Kommander Kobayashi with 10 new chamber operas between 2005 to 2007 and the trilogy How we feel (2008-2011), as well as a scenic version of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (2009) and Parisian Life by Jacques Offenbach (2011). Following productions were The Castle based on the novel by Franz Kafka in co-production with Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the music theatre project The Victory over the Sun based on the futuristic opera by Kasemir Malevich and Michail Majutshin, in co-production with different Berlin’s culture institutions.
Since 2014 took place the project The T-House-Tour #1-#8, an improvisational work in progress about forms of musical theatre, featured by important figures of the European jazz and contemporary music scene, whose last international stages included the Schauspielhaus in Zürich (2018) as well as Matucana 100 in Santiago de Chile and Parque Cultural de Valparaíso (2019). 2015-2016 the project National Opera #1-#3 examined the relationship between the arts and national identity on the base of Der Freischütz by C.M. von Weber. After that took place The Grand Coalition, addressed to the musical universe of J.S. Bach, in a co-production with Gare du Nord Basel and Radialsystem V-Berlin (2016). It followed the trilogy The Bible #1-#3 with world premieres by Michael Wertmüller and Claudio Puntin (2017), The song of the earth after Gustav Mahler (2018) and the project Dimensions variable at the Haus der Statistik in Berlin with works by Bach, Satie and Bartok among others (2019). The latest productions include two further trilogy series: The opera #1-#3 after Claudio Monteverdi in co-production with Kunstfest Weimar, Deutsches National Theater Weimar and CPH Opera Festival Copenhagen (2019-2022) and the Beethoven cycle We’ll take the liberty #1-#3 in co-production with the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonic Hall) as part of the 250th Beethoven anniversary year.
With more than 35 productions the company is one of the most important protagonists of music theatre’s independent scene in Europe. 2014 Novoflot received the prestigious award «George-Tabori-Preis» for its achievements.
He has conducted at important Europeans festivals and venues, like Hamburg State Opera, Théâtre National de Luxemburg, Teatr Wielki (Warsaw), Ultraschall Festival Berlin, Warsaw Autumn, Trafó Budapest, Radialsystem V Berlin, Stuttgart Music Festival, Eclat Festival, Salzburg Music Biennale, Akademie der Künste Berlin, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Gare du Nord Basel, Deutsches National Theater Weimar, Cologne Philharmonic Hall, among others.
Contemporary music is a central part of his repertoire, including a large number of world premiere performances of instrumental and music theatre works. In Chile he was co-founder and music director of the new music Ensemble Quadrivium (1992-1995) and in Europe he collaborate with prestigious contemporary music ensembles such as ensemble mosaik and ensemble ascolta.
In South America, he has conducted the Orquesta Filarmónica de Chile, Orquesta Sinfónica de Concepción, Orquesta de Cámara de Chile and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile, among others. Since 2014 he is regular guest conductor of the Shanxi Symphony Orchestra, China.
